# Motion Detection: Protecting Your Family

Garage door safety has advanced significantly since the tragic accidents that led to mandatory safety regulations in 1993. Today's doors include multiple safety features, with motion detection playing a crucial role in protecting your loved ones. At Garage Door Everetts, safety is our top priority, and we ensure every door we install meets or exceeds current safety standards.

How Photo-Eye Sensors Work

Every garage door installed after 1993 must have photo-eye sensors by federal law. These devices project an invisible infrared beam across the door opening about 6 inches above the floor. If anything breaks the beam while the door is closing.a child, a pet, or even a bicycle.the door immediately reverses.

The sensors consist of two units: a transmitter and a receiver. They're typically mounted on the door frame on each side of the opening. A small LED light indicates when they're properly aligned and functioning.

Testing Your Photo Eyes

Test your sensors monthly to ensure they're working properly: 1. Start with the door open 2. Press the close button on the remote or wall control 3. Wave a broom handle or similar object through the sensor beam 4. The door should reverse immediately

If it doesn't reverse, the sensors may need cleaning, realignment, or replacement. Contact our service team if your sensors fail this test.

Advanced Motion Detection Features

Modern garage door openers offer enhanced motion detection beyond the basic photo-eye requirement:

Smart Sensors

WiFi-enabled openers can send alerts to your phone if motion is detected in your garage when you're away. This adds a layer of security beyond simple operation, letting you know if someone is in your garage.

Auto-Close Features

Some openers will automatically close the door after a set period if no motion is detected.preventing the common "did I close the garage?" worry. You can set the timer from 1 to 10 minutes depending on your preferences.

Camera Integration

Premium openers include built-in cameras that record when motion is detected, giving you visual confirmation of garage activity. Review footage from your phone wherever you are.

Maintaining Safety Features

Safety sensors are reliable but need occasional attention to function properly:

- Keep lenses clean: Dust and cobwebs can block the beam - Check alignment: Bumping the sensors can knock them out of alignment - Protect from sunlight: Direct sun can interfere with infrared sensors - Replace batteries: Wireless sensors need fresh batteries periodically - Inspect wiring: Look for frayed or damaged wires

Our maintenance services include comprehensive safety system inspections to ensure your family stays protected.

The Auto-Reverse Test

Beyond photo eyes, your door has a mechanical auto-reverse feature. Test this quarterly:

1. Place a 2x4 flat on the ground where the door closes 2. Press the close button 3. The door should reverse within 2 seconds of contact with the board

If either safety feature fails these tests, call for service immediately. These features prevent serious injuries and are not optional.they're essential.

Upgrading Older Openers

If your garage door opener predates the safety regulations or lacks modern features, consider an upgrade. New openers with enhanced motion detection offer better protection and peace of mind. They're also quieter, more reliable, and often include smart home connectivity.

Signs it's time to upgrade: - Opener is more than 15 years old, Missing or malfunctioning photo eyes, No auto-reverse function, Excessive noise during operation, Inconsistent performance
